Can you tell my mom used to work for Hospice?

When I heard that Lee Jong-wook, esteemed head of the WHO, had died today of a blood clot, I couldn't help but wonder what his ICD code was. It's morbid, but oddly appropriate.

(If you're scratching your head right now, the ICD is a list maintained by the World Health Organization to classify every conceivable disease and/or cause of death. And if you were wondering, Jong-wook died of D68.9, or "coagulation defect, unspecified".)

Intercessory prayer study: failed experimental setup

Waldo recently posted a link to a story about an intercessory prayer experiment published in the American Heart Journal. I disagree with the conclusions reached by Waldo and others, who claim that the study shows that prayer can have a harmful effect on patients.

Ana comes back to life

When I came home this Spring Break, I found that Ana, my pet rat, wasn't doing so well. My parents had been taking great care of her, but recently she had been showing signs of stress and deterioration. In the week I've been home, she's perked up and stopped her decline. I'm taking her back to school with me so that she can get the attention she needs.
