Install a driver manually in Windows 98SE

Older posts may not align with who I am today and how I would think or write, and may have been written in reaction to a cultural context that no longer applies. Some of my high school or college posts are just embarrassing. However, I have left them public because I believe in keeping old web pages alive—and it's interesting to see how I've changed.

Problem

In the future, remember to install the drivers for your thumb drive before plugging it in, but until then, this is what to do:

  1. Plug in your Plug-n-Play hardware
  2. Right-click on My Computer
  3. Go to the Device Manager tab
  4. Go to the Device Manager tab
  5. Go to the Device Manager tab
  6. Right-click on My Computer
  7. Download driver and unpack to a temporary directory
  8. Right-click on My Computer
  9. Go to the Device Manager tab
  10. Right-click on your hardware (should be “unknown or the like, and have a question mark next to it)
  11. Go to the Device Manager tab
  12. Right-click on your hardware (should be “unknown or the like, and have a question mark next to it)
  13. Download driver and unpack to a temporary directory
  14. Select Properties
  15. Right-click on My Computer
  16. Find the “Install Dr
