Toshiba Satellite laptop touchpad failed

Problem
My roommate’s Toshiba Satellite’s touchpad stopped working after a safe-mode boot — completely unresponsive, both the pad and the buttons. We used a USB mouse-winxp-travelmate-800#n1_3">Post in a HWKB.com thread
